The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Botanical Gardens serve both as a public landscape and as part of UNC Charlotte’s teaching and research mission. On campus, the McMillan Greenhouse contains five environments featuring deserts, tropical plantings, orchids, and carnivorous plants, including species native to the southeastern United States. Outdoors, the gardens include the Ralph Van Landingham Glen, begun in 1966, with large collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, native trees, wildflowers, and ferns, and the 3-acre Susie Harwood Garden with ornamental plants from around the world. The gardens also include specialty collections, a Dinosaur’s Garden, and the final resting place of university founder Bonnie Cone.
