In 1788, a Baptist congregation that was a branch of Cashaway Church, founded by Welsh Neck Church, purchased land 2 miles southwest of here from the Rev. John Brown. The congregation was independently constituted in 1789 and named Muddy Creek. The church, known as Brownsville by 1829, moved to this site in 1860. This building, completed in 1979 to resemble the 1860 church that burned in 1977, contains the original pine pews and pulpit furniture from the 1860 building. The Welsh Neck Baptist Association and the Pee Dee Baptist Association were organized at Brownsville Church in 1832 and 1876, respectively, and before 1832 Brownsville belonged to the Charleston Association.
