Oak Park Conservatory, a historic botanical garden and working plant-growing facility in Oak Park, began in 1914 as a community effort to house exotic plants collected by local residents, and its current Edwardian-style glass building opened in 1929. Threatened around 1970 after years of neglect, it survived through local citizen activism that expanded its mission to education as well as supplying plants for village parks. A 2000 expansion made it the third largest conservatory in the Chicago area, with about 8,000 square feet of growing space and more than 3,000 plants, including some from the original collection. Its civic and architectural significance was recognized with National Register listing in 2005.
