A Methodist congregation was established in this vicinity at the home of White Brown in 1778 by Francis Asbury. The original church, known as Brown’s Chapel, was begun in 1781 and completed in 1806 by White Brown, Lemuel Davis, and Jacob Kinder. Early preachers here included Bishop Asbury, free born Gattettson, and Dr. Coke. The present church was built in 1895.
