The Gettysburg Battlefield Historic District preserves the landscape of the Battle of Gettysburg and many related sites in and around Gettysburg beyond the national military park. Its significance spans from prewar terrain and surviving early buildings to the defining events of 1863, the Gettysburg Address, and decades of memorialization and preservation. The district includes more than 1,000 contributing structures and 315 historic buildings, from colonial-era taverns and battle-related features to monuments, trolley remains, observation tower ruins, and later museum development. Preservation began in 1864, expanded through federal action in the late 19th century, and has continued through modern efforts to protect this nationally important battlefield and its changing remembrance.
