Cherry was named by surveyor Gisbourne J. Cherry. A post office was established there in 1898. The community had 8 stores, 2 cotton mills, 1 gristmill, 1 blacksmith shop, 2 sawmills, 1 jail, 2 churches, 2 schools, 1 colored and 1 white, a Charitable Brotherhood Lodge Hall, and 1 barber shop.
