Completed in 1956 in Detroit’s Palmer Woods neighborhood, the Dorothy H. Turkel House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is his only building within Detroit’s city limits. The private residence is especially significant as a rare two-story example of Wright’s Usonian design, a form more commonly expressed in modest single-story houses. Its larger, more spacious plan makes it distinctive within that body of work and an important example of Wright’s late residential architecture in Detroit. After its purchase in 2006, Norman Silk and Dale Morgan carried out a major restoration with former Wright apprentice Lawrence R. Brink, completed in 2010.
