The L. C. Bates Museum in Hinckley, Maine, is a natural history and cultural museum on the Good Will-Hinckley campus, rooted in George Walter Hinckley’s educational mission for underprivileged children. It occupies the Quincy Building, a Romanesque Revival brick school designed by William R. Miller and completed in 1903, later adapted for museum use by the early 1920s and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Known as a “museum of a museum” for its surviving early display environment, it features 32 Maine habitat dioramas, diverse natural history galleries, 1920s painted backgrounds by Charles Daniel Hubbard, and grounds including Sun Set Park and its arboretum.
