Liberty Hall was the residence of Governor William Livingston, an eminent lawyer, statesman, writer, and poet. He served as Governor of New Jersey from 1776 to 1790, represented New Jersey in the First Continental Congress in 1774, again served as a delegate in 1775, was commissioned Brigadier General in command of the New Jersey Militia in 1775, and was a delegate to the convention that framed the national Constitution. He was a staunch friend of Washington.
