The Flatiron Building, a triangular early skyscraper at 175 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, opened in 1902 as the Fuller Building and quickly became one of New York’s most recognizable landmarks. Designed by Daniel Burnham’s firm with Frederick P. Dinkelberg and engineered by Purdy and Henderson, its steel frame answered doubts about whether such a narrow tower could withstand strong winds. Its shape gave both the building and the surrounding Flatiron District their name. Long a prominent site near Madison Square, it later gained landmark protections at the city, national register, and national historic landmark levels, and is now being converted from offices to residential condominiums.
