John Shaw Billings, M.D., made what was called "the most important contribution yet made to American medicine." A Civil War surgeon, he became a pioneer planner of modern hospitals and an early advocate of preventive medicine. In 1880, Billings published the Surgeon-General's first medical Index Catalogue.
