The monument honors Confederate dead as men portrayed as descended from Revolutionary stock and devoted to honorable tradition, who at the call of duty gave their lives as a sacrifice for their country. Its inscriptions praise their pure devotion and valiant hearts as enduring beyond earthly pride and grandeur, and remember the glory of the men who wore the gray. It was erected in 1910 in memory of the Boys in Gray under the auspices of the Sarah E. Hornady Chapter U.D.C.
