Salem Baptist Church, Pike County's oldest church, was organized by Dr. C.T. Mahoney and since 1824 has enriched the life of this section. Organizations formed here included the Salem Baptist Association in 1839, the Baptist General Assoc. in 1868, the Ladies Aid Society in 1891, the Salem-Troy Baptist Assoc. in 1904, and the Women's Missionary Society in 1905. First a log structure, the church occupied four wooden buildings before the present brick structure was built in 1939.
