The Birch Coulee monument was erected by the State of Minnesota in 1894 in grateful remembrance of the heroism of the gallant soldiers and citizens who fought the Battle of Birch Coulee and to perpetuate their names. It identifies Capt. Hiram P. Grant of Company A, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, as commanding, and J.W. Daniels as surgeon. It records those killed and wounded from Company A, Company G, citizens, Companies D and E, Company F, Company I, Company K, and Company B, as well as Lt. J.H. Swan of Company I, 3d Regiment Minnesota Volunteers, and Capt. Anderson's company, with named dead and wounded. It also lists commissioners associated with the monument: C. D. Gilfilan, A. G. Stoddard, R. B. Henton, J. W. Daniels, S. G. Arbuckle, and W. H. Grant.
