State Schoolers served in the U.S. military, and those known to have given their lives in defense of the country between 1886 and 1970 included Harold Betin, Marvin Charnell, Edward Fuller, Owen Garlinghouse, Howard Haley, Willard Hanning, Ernest Hart, Leo Raymond Johnson, Jerome Linders, David Lust, Freeman Lust, Michael Marone, Joseph Nemec, George Patterson, William F. Reynolds, Ernest Schleifer, Ralph Scoggins, Dorland Smith, Malcolm Smith, John Stern, Larry Supalla, John Wallin, and Melvin Waters. The tribute was given in memory by the Merlin Martinson family; Merlin was a State School boy and proud American.
