Chipeta Mountain is a 13,495-foot peak in Colorado’s Sawatch Range, within San Isabel National Forest near Mount Ouray, and its name honors Chipeta, the Native leader remembered for seeking peace between Native communities and European settlers. The mountain and neighboring Mount Ouray connect her memory with that of Chief Ouray. Its landscape reveals ancient Paleoproterozoic gneiss, later igneous intrusions, uplift from major mountain-building episodes, faulting tied to the Rio Grande Rift, and glacial shaping. Long confusion on official maps placed the name on a lower rise, but in 2017 the United States Board on Geographic Names restored Chipeta Mountain to the true summit.
