After their dispersal in 1704, most Apalachee who were not killed or enslaved moved north into British territory, while others migrated west to Pensacola and Mobile and a small number moved eastward and eventually settled around St. Augustine. The Apalachee never repopulated their traditional homeland. During the abandonment of San Luis, residents probably took their most valuable possessions with them, but heavy objects such as church bells were buried with the intention of reclaiming them someday. Only one bell fragment has been found at San Luis so far, suggesting that more may still be buried.
