On Nov. 27, 1864, the Left Wing of Gen. Sherman’s U.S. army, consisting of the 14th and 20th Corps, moved from Sandersville toward Louisville on its destructive March to the Sea. The 20th Corps under Williams and Carlin’s division of the 14th Corps under Davis moved to Davisboro and camped for the night. Morgan’s and Baird’s divisions of the 14th Corps marched northeast and crossed the Ogeechee River at Fenn’s Bridge. Baird then turned right one-half mile northeast of the bridge and camped on the lower road, while Morgan camped on the Hudson place at Grange. Wheeler had initially left Fenn’s Bridge intact for his own use, but a later attempt to destroy it was prevented by the arrival of Baird and Morgan.
