In the early 1950s, a view looking east from the Madison Avenue and South Street intersection showed businesses on the block that included Cooksey Drug, JC Penney Co., Hoover Drug, Dr. Philip W. Waugh, Copening Jewelers, Harrison Shoe Store, Scott Self Service, and Iola State Bank. Two stores on the block were owned by A.W. Beck. During that period, the block was home to activities ranging from wagon repairs to furniture and piano sales.
