Atascosa Lodge No. 379, A.F. and A.M., was organized by eleven Master Masons in Benton City in 1872 and chartered on June 9, 1873, by the Grand Lodge of Texas. Its first hall, built of stone in 1876, also provided space for a public school. The lodge furnished social and cultural leadership to the locality and was moved to Lytle on May 20, 1909.
