The Billiards Hall
St. Louis, Missouri · Cherokee-Lemp Historic District
History
2
During the late 19th century, this site was the yard behind Oeler's Hall, a three story brick structure whose L-shaped building wrapped around the corner of Jefferson to Cherokee. Louis Oehler's brick yard was nearby and probably furnished brick for early construction along Cherokee Street. The 1912-13 St. Louis Red Book lists a paperhanger named John Rabenau at this address. The current building dates to 1925 and features building materials popularized by the Arts and Crafts Movement in the 1920's, including a green mission tile roof and rough or mat brick. In 1935, the storefront was a billiards hall owned by Joseph Buckowitz, brother of long-time neighborhood politician Louis. The storefront was rehabbed in 1998.
