Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1966 as Indiana’s first National Wildlife Refuge, preserves a varied landscape of converted farmland, deciduous forest, and wetlands in southern Indiana. Created with Duck Stamp funding and named for the Muscatatuck River, it is especially important for waterfowl and other migratory birds, including nesting bald eagles, wintering tundra swans, trumpeter swans, and whooping cranes in the eastern recovery effort. Its importance also includes archaeological sites on the National Register of Historic Places, a surviving population of northern copperbelly water snakes, reintroduced river otters, and visible traces of earlier settlement such as pioneer cemeteries and a historic log cabin.
