Charles F. Eastman (1821-1880) was a barber, second-hand clothing dealer, mariner, and hack driver who financially supported the Abyssinian Meeting House and School. With his four sons, he owned and operated several barber shops, including one on this site. Barber shops served as important centers of communication in the anti-slavery movement and helped freedom seekers change their appearance.
