Built in 1886 in the Romanesque style, this decorative brick building preserves a store interior that is basically the same as it was 120 years ago, when it operated as a hardware store selling buggies, wagons, windmills, and stoves. Before automobiles, when most families kept horses, harnesses and other livery items were also made and sold here, and a tinsmith shop operated upstairs with the smith's tools still in place. The store still retains its original windows, 14-foot tin ceilings, wood floors, shelves, wainscoting, and counters, and its large rope-drawn freight elevator, once used to haul buggies from the rear of the building to an upstairs display window, remains operative. Its original stained glass windows have been carefully restored, and since 1939 the building has been owned by the same family and now houses Buggy Days Antiques as a re-use of this well-maintained Victorian store.
