During World War II, United States submarines held the lines against the enemy while the fleets replaced losses and repaired wounds. In memory of the crews of the 52 United States submarines lost in the war—Sealion, Grenadier, Grayback, Tang, S-36, Runner, Trout, Escolar, S-26, R-12, Tullibee, Albacore, Shark I, Grayling, Gudgeon, Growler, Perch, Pompano, Herring, Scamp, S-27, Cisco, Golet, Swordfish, S-39, S-44, S-28, Barbel, Grunion, Dorado, Robalo, Kete, Argonaut, Wahoo, Flier, Trigger, Grampus, Corvina, Harder, Snook, Amberjack, Sculpin, Seawolf, Lagarto, Triton, Capelin, Darter, Bonefish, Pickerel, Scorpion, Shark II, and Bullhead—the submarine service lost a total of 374 officers and 3131 enlisted men during the war, the highest casualty rate of any branch of any service.
