General George W. Morgan's 9,000 USA force, cut off from supplies at Cumberland Gap, retreated 200 miles in 16 days to Greenup on the Ohio River, passing near here on September 23, 1862. General John H. Morgan's CSA men moved by here on their tragic last raid into Kentucky; after two battles at Mount Sterling, they were defeated at Cynthiana on June 12, 1864, and retreated to Virginia.
