This area was planted in the spring of 2017 with native prairie seed and is growing, but it will take 2-3 years to mature. During this transformation, Toledo Zoo conservation staff will manage invasive species and add plants as needed. Prairies historically occurred throughout northwest Ohio and provided numerous ecological benefits. Prairie plants develop deep root systems that help them survive seasonal droughts, reduce storm water runoff, remove harmful nutrients before they reach bodies of water, and sequester carbon dioxide from the air. Native prairie plants also provide food and habitat for local wildlife, including pollinators such as monarch butterflies.
