Peter Norbeck, who lived here from 1870 to 1936, was the first native South Dakota governor, a statesman, United States senator, patriot, and well driller. He sponsored and founded Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Grand Tetons National Park, Badlands National Monument, Iron Mountain Road, and Needles Highway, and he was the author of the Migratory Waterfowl Act.
