Shackleford Banks, a barrier island in North Carolina’s Outer Banks near Beaufort, Harkers Island, and Fort Macon State Park, is part of Cape Lookout National Seashore and is known for beaches, camping, wildlife, and its feral Banker horses. Its recorded history reaches to the early colonial period, when John Shackleford acquired land there and troops and corn plantings were noted on the Banks. The island later supported the settlement of Diamond City until 1902. Storms repeatedly reshaped it, and the 1933 Outer Banks Hurricane opened Barden Inlet, separating it from Core Banks. Shipwrecks, including the 1886 wreck of the Chrissie Wright, also figure in its past.
