Columbus's first organized school was founded on Feb. 3, 1851, by Caledonia Lodge No. 68, A.F. & A.M. It was housed on the first floor of the lodge hall at this site, and for many years the seminary taught literary subjects, music, and art. The building was destroyed in the Sept. 1909 hurricane.
