G. Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area is a 4,000-acre protected landscape in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, mostly in Fauquier County, with smaller portions in Warren and Clarke counties. Its two separate parcels rise from about 700 to 2,200 feet and include hardwood forest, grassy clearings, seepage swamps, rocky outcrops, and 10-acre Lake Thompson, with the Appalachian Trail running along the ridge. Especially important for its plant life, it is considered one of the Blue Ridge’s richest botanical sites, known for vast spring displays of white trillium and other wildflowers. Managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, it also supports a wide range of outdoor recreation.
