Jamestown Church stands at the heart of Historic Jamestown, site of the first permanent English settlement in the Americas and colonial Virginia’s early capital. The present Memorial Church, dedicated in 1907, preserves a brick tower dating from at least 1639, the last above-ground survivor from Jamestown’s capital era and one of the oldest surviving European-built remnants in the original Thirteen Colonies. Earlier churches on this site witnessed the colony’s first worship, the marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe in 1614, and Virginia’s first Representative Legislative Assembly in 1619. Archaeological discoveries and preservation work have made the church a major link to early English colonial history in North America.
