Near Easton, Maryland, this archaeological site preserves the remains of Doncaster, a town established in 1684 on one of Talbot County’s earliest land grants, surveyed in 1658. Regarded as one of Maryland’s first planned towns, Doncaster was also the site of the first Roman Catholic church built on the Eastern Shore. At its height, it had inns, a chapel, warehouses, a ferry, stores, a public square, residences, and punishments such as stocks and a whipping post, reflecting the structure of a small colonial town. Archaeological deposits recorded in 1961 confirmed the buried settlement, and its significance was recognized by National Register listing in 1975.
