Baggage carts were a standard item on railroad depot platforms, whose height was approximately the same as a rail car's bed so baggage and freight could be loaded and unloaded quickly and easily. These carts were pulled by hand around the platform. Milk cans recall a time when trains stopped along the way to pick up milk from farmers. Most depots also had a permanent ramp and platform, usually on a siding, for loading and unloading heavy freight, farm machinery, cars, and similar goods.
