Cold Springs was an added Pony Express station in Lincoln County, Nebraska, used from July 1, 1861, to November 20, 1861. Lincoln County has five Pony Express station sites, and traveling west they are Gilman’s, Cottonwood Springs, Cold Springs, Fremont Springs, and Dorsey’s. Cottonwood Springs and Fremont Springs were two of the original 84 Pony Express stations used on the initial April 3, 1860 trip between St. Joseph, Missouri, and San Francisco, California. On July 1, 1861, the company operating the Pony Express began running a near-daily stagecoach service along with its twice-a-week Pony Express operation in both eastbound and westbound directions. New added stations were needed to serve the stagecoach, and the Pony Express also used these added stations, including Gilman’s, Cold Springs, and Dorsey’s in this area.
