At Sixth and Front Streets in 1898, the Monett Railroad YMCA was built. Under the direction of Mr. George J.C. Wilhelm, it was a very active unit in Monett. It housed railroad workers with clean rooms and hot baths and also gave people opportunities for Bible study. As station number 282, the facility served railroad employees and citizens of the local community for forty-five years. After the building was torn down during WWII, its bricks were used to build the centralized traffic control dispatching center in Springfield, Missouri.
