Built in 1856 by Charles Alberding, this building had a predominant history as a saloon. Over time, different business owners gave it new names, including Alberding Saloon, Pioneer Saloon, Oyster Saloon, Saint Charles Saloon, and Bixel Brewery. Its current name honors the Bixels, a prominent 1850s family, and celebrates the family’s Columbia Brewery, a tradition in Columbia for more than 47 years.
