Penny Hot Springs is a geothermal spring near Redstone, Colorado, at the foot of Hell’s Gates beside the Crystal River. Hot mineral water rises at about 133 °F into primitive stone soaking pools at the river’s edge, where bathers can mix in cold river water to adjust the temperature. Local Native Americans used the springs for generations. The site later took the name of Daniel Penny, who ran a bathhouse and small hotel nearby. After the bathhouse was bulldozed in the 1960s following disputes over skinny-dipping, Pitkin County acquired the land and restored the spring in the early 1990s. It remains an undeveloped local soaking place.
