Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, is a 503-acre reservation centered on Peeskawso Peak, a quartzite summit known for expansive views and heavy public use. Long before it became a recreational destination, the mountain was sacred to the ancestors of the Mohican people, whose stone prayers once crowned the monument that gave the mountain its name. In 2021, summit and trail names were changed in collaboration with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohicans to reflect that history. The mountain also figured in the lives of William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville, and later saw logging, conservation, and continued use for hiking, picnicking, and seasonal hunting.
