Fowler Mountain is a basalt traprock ridge on Connecticut’s Metacomet Ridge, rising about 750 feet above the Quinnipiac River valley and reservoirs near Durham, Wallingford, and Meriden. Formed from Triassic lava flows later tilted by faulting and earthquakes, it developed steep cliffs, rocky ledges, and varied habitats that support uncommon plant communities and serve as an important route for migrating raptors. The Mattabesett Trail follows its ridgeline, and the mountain is used for low-impact recreation. It is also important as an aquifer and protected watershed landscape, with conserved land in Trimountain State Park and other holdings helping resist ongoing pressure from development and quarrying.
