Tishomingo State Park in northeastern Mississippi, near the Natchez Trace Parkway, is known for Bear Creek Canyon and a rugged landscape of sandstone cliffs, rocky creeks, springs, and wooded hills unusual in the state. Named for Chief Tishomingo, a major Chickasaw leader born nearby around 1735, it reflects both deep Native history, with evidence of Paleo-Indian presence as early as 7000 B.C., and the legacy of Chickasaw removal after the 1837 Treaty of Doaksville. Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and opened in 1939, the park preserves distinctive stone-built facilities and remains a major center for hiking, climbing, paddling, camping, and other outdoor recreation.
