Virginia City became Montana’s most important center of notorious road agent activities in 1863 and 1864, the center of Montana’s famous vigilante organization in 1863 and 1864, the home of Montana’s first newspaper, The Montana Post, in 1864, the site of Montana’s first post office in 1864, the second territorial capital of Montana from 1865 to 1875, the place where Montana’s first Supreme Court session was held in 1865, and the place where the seal of Montana was adopted in 1866.
