Richard Parks Bland declared that he spoke for the great masses of the Mississippi Valley in opposing the domination of any political party that would sacrifice silver and demonetize it. He was remembered as a dead statesman by his friends at Lebanon, Missouri, his old home, known as the Monticello of the West.
