The site was originally occupied by the Runkles Mill. In 1919, Marion V. Runkles purchased the building behind the mill to use for mill storage. It was later used as a railyard storage building, and after the B&O ended service to Mount Airy, the Southern States Store used it for storage. Since then, it has housed several businesses, including a tailor and dress making shop, VanSant Plumbing, Kittin Chicks, and Patapsco Bike Company.
