The Mobile Point Range Lights guided ships into Mobile Bay from Mobile Point at the end of the Fort Morgan peninsula near Mobile, Alabama. A brick lighthouse first lit in 1822 served as a landfall light until the taller Sand Island Light began operating in 1858, after which Mobile Point became a harbor light and gained a fourth-order Fresnel lens. Two shorter beach towers also served as range lights before the Civil War. Cannon fire during the Battle of Mobile Bay destroyed the original tower. A temporary wooden light followed, then an iron lattice replacement in 1872 remained in use until 1966. The later historic tower was eventually dismantled and, pending restoration, remained in storage.
