Whitefish Mountain Resort, long known as Big Mountain, is a major ski area in northwestern Montana near Whitefish and Glacier National Park. Opened in 1947 as a community-owned public company, it grew from a single T-bar into a large resort with varied terrain, broad views, abundant snowfall, and fourteen lifts. It became an important U.S. ski racing venue, hosting the U.S. Alpine Championships in 1949 and 2001; the 1949 event featured Andrea Mead’s sweep of the women’s titles. The mountain is also linked to Olympic champion Tommy Moe. Renamed in 2007, it remains notable for both its skiing and the controversy surrounding the loss of local ownership.
