Approximately 200 people who died at the Milwaukee County Asylum / Hospital for the Insane were buried here between March 1880 and November 1914, including patients without financial means or family to claim them and Civil War veteran Albert Melms, 3rd Class Musician of the 24th Illinois Infantry. During those years, four superintendents oversaw the institution: Dr. James H. McBride from March 1880 to August 1884, Dr. F.B. Scribner from August 1884 to November 1885, Dr. A.J. Hare from November 1885 to June 1888, and Dr. Moses J. White from June 1888 to November 1914. During Dr. White’s 27-year tenure, innovative programs included the proper care and burial of patients who died alone and without family to claim them.
