Dr. Paul H. Hohm devoted his life to medicine for more than six decades and, at the time of his death, was South Dakota's senior practicing physician. After graduating from Huron College, studying medicine at the University of Chicago, and serving in World War II, he returned to Huron in 1946 and founded the Tschetter & Hohm Clinic with his brother and uncle. He became a distinguished family practitioner and surgeon who prescribed medicines, set broken bones, delivered babies, and performed surgery, and he was deeply loved by patients who regarded him as both doctor and friend. He also served the medical profession as Past President of the State Medical Association, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the South Dakota Comprehensive Health Planning and Regional Medical Programs, and one of the original incorporators of South Dakota Blue Cross Blue Shield, later serving as South Dakota President. In Huron, he served on the original board of directors that purchased and operated Huron Regional Medical Center, supported community health and economic development, helped establish the Christen Hohm Lusk Community Foundation, and designed, financed, and supervised the building of the Hohm Courts. His service brought honors from his medical peers, Huron College, the City of Huron, and the State of South Dakota, and he was also devoted to his family, including his wife Carol, to whom he was married for 67 years, their three children, and seven grandchildren.
