Opened in 1923 in the Bronx, Yankee Stadium became the long-time home of the New York Yankees and one of the most famous sports venues in the United States. Built after the club’s owners chose to leave the Polo Grounds and financed by Jacob Ruppert, it quickly became identified with Babe Ruth, the Yankees’ rise, and the nickname “The House That Ruth Built.” The ballpark also hosted the New York Giants, major football games, boxing, concerts, Papal Masses, and landmark baseball moments. After decades of renovation and decline, it closed after the 2008 season, and its site became Heritage Field.
