The Maryland State House, the oldest in the nation still in legislative use, was the site where General George Washington resigned his commission before the Continental Congress on December 23, 1783. Here Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris on January 14, 1784, ending the Revolutionary war, and on May 7, 1784 appointed Thomas Jefferson plenipotentiary. From here the Annapolis convention issued its call to the states on September 14, 1786, leading to the Constitutional Convention.
